Paper airplanes, curious kids, and a gym full of families – that was the scene at Mother Teresa Early Childhood Education Centre on May 21 for the school’s annual STEAM night.

The evening’s theme was “Take Flight,” with every activity tied to the concept of flight. Stations gave students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 2 a chance to explore science, technology, engineering, arts, and math through hands-on experiments and crafts.

Principal Sheila Jurke said the goal is simple: show young children that science is for them.

“It really helps build their curiosity and the belief that they can be scientists,” Jurke said. “They can grow up to do anything they want. And it starts with just being curious about sometimes the simplest of things.”

The paper airplane station in the gym drew some of the loudest cheers of the night, with kids racing their creations across the floor. Parents got in on it too.

“I never knew how to really make one before, and this is pretty neat – we’re gonna do it at home,” Jurke said, recounting one parent’s reaction.

That carry-home effect was part of the point. Families left with STEAM experiments and craft ideas they can replicate at home, extending the learning well past the school doors.

The event was supported by the school’s parent council. Sobeys provided cookies and juice, and teachers volunteered their evening to make it happen.

“Our teachers are very willing to give of their time in the evening, because they understand the importance of community and our involvement with our families,” Jurke said.
