I didn’t start Border Pulse because I saw a gap in the market. I started it because Lloydminster needed something it wasn’t getting, and I could no longer provide it anywhere else.

For a year, I drove more than 1 million views to someone else’s platform. I helped build their social presence into what it became. Then I found out fast whether I believed in the institution or the work.

I believe in the work. I believe in Lloydminster.

So I built Border Pulse to be a bridge. To ask the questions people want asked, whether or not they upset someone. To connect the people who vote with the people who represent them. To share what others in this community are too scared to say, or too disinterested to dig into.

We’ve covered council when it was uncomfortable. We’ve published overdose numbers when silence was costing lives. We gave a Ukrainian woman standing outside city hall a voice, because four years of showing up deserved more than a footnote.

We’ve done it with no staff, no building and no corporate ownership. Just a journalist, his wife, a computer, camera equipment, a drone and a black lab named Wrex.

I have no obligation to city hall. They don’t spend advertising dollars with Border Pulse. Provincial and federal parties don’t either. That means I answer to readers, not advertisers or officials.

One of our newest tools is an interactive business directory. It connects our 150,000 views to the local services people are already searching for. Every dollar spent there stays in this community, instead of disappearing into multinational interests.

My interests aren’t in retirement property in Montana or a stable of horses somewhere south of the border. They’re not spread across American real estate or a publishing operation in Mexico. My interests are Canadian, and more specifically, they’re right here, in this community.

I’ve spent nearly 15 years in this craft. I’m more than 6,000 days sober. I’ve been homeless. None of that makes me special. All of it shapes how I report, who I fight for and why I do this work.

Border Pulse exists because Lloydminster deserves a paper of record that actually reads the bylaws. That shows up when administration would rather it didn’t. That tells you what happened at council Monday and puts it in your hands Wednesday.
