Firefighters rescued a driver trapped in a flipped vehicle south of Lloydminster early Friday (Oct. 23).

Legacy Regional Protective Services Station 1 was dispatched at about 3:55 a.m. to a report of a trapped driver after a rollover.

Crews arrived on Highway 17 and found the pickup upside down in the east ditch, just south of Township Road 490. The driver, the truck’s only occupant, was still inside.

Regional Chief Dean Peters credited the driver of a passing truck with finding the vehicle and calling 911. That driver also tried to free the man, who was partially submerged.

A witness told BorderPulse the passing truck was a vacuum truck. The driver stopped after spotting the vehicle, then backed up to help as best they could.

Firefighters worked in knee-deep water and used several tools, including the jaws of life, to remove the man and hand him to EMS crews, said Peters.

The witness said EMS crews arrived before firefighters. They were already working in the knee-deep water, trying to free the driver ahead of the fire crew.

The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Peters told BorderPulse the crash appeared to be caused by the driver swerving to avoid an animal. It is not known how long the truck sat in the ditch before the passing driver spotted it.

Firefighters were back in the hall and back in service shortly before 6 a.m.

“I want to thank the volunteer firefighters for taking the time to respond and the families and workplaces who allow these individuals to help their fellow community members,” said Peters.

“I’d also like to remind motorists, please, be aware and watch for animals and do not swerve.”
