A routine traffic stop has led to what police are calling a major disruption to the illegal tobacco trade, after officers seized approximately 8.8 million unstamped cigarettes with an estimated street value of $7.65 million.

According to Lloydminster RCMP, the seizure took place in the early morning hours of Nov. 18, when officers stopped a semi-truck travelling along 44 Street. Police say the driver was unable to provide proper documentation for the load, which led to a trailer inspection and the eventual execution of a search warrant.

The operation included the Lloydminster RCMP Forensic Identification Section, Crime Reduction Unit, Saskatchewan RCMP Roving Traffic Unit and the Alberta RCMP Seized Property Management Directorate.

The driver, a 33-year-old Surrey, B.C. man, has been charged with several offences under the Criminal Code, the Excise Act and the Alberta Tobacco Tax Act. Charges include fraud over $5,000, possession of proceeds of crime, unlawful possession of tobacco products, possession of more than 1,000 cigarettes and importing tobacco into Alberta.

He has been released with conditions and is scheduled to appear in court in Lloydminster on Dec. 16.

“This seizure represents a significant disruption to the illegal tobacco trade,” said Sgt. Christopher Byford of the Lloydminster RCMP. “Contraband tobacco operations undermine legitimate businesses and are often linked to organized crime. Our members will continue working closely with provincial and federal partners to combat trafficking and any criminal activity connected to it.”

When asked, Byfield said he also believes it is the largest seizure of it’s kind in Alberta.

Mayor Gerald Aalbers attended the announcement Monday afternoon at City Hall and thanked police for their efforts. He noted the seizure protects the community and reinforces the need for proactive policing in Lloydminster.
