Environment Canada issued a yellow watch for severe thunderstorms in Lloydminster at 6:48 p.m. Sunday.
The agency says conditions favour thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. The watch covers the City of Lloydminster.
Environment Canada rates the watch’s impact level as moderate, with high forecast confidence.
“When thunder roars, go indoors,” the agency said in its bulletin, warning that lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.
The risk of severe thunderstorms is expected this evening, according to the forecast.
At 6 p.m., Lloydminster sat at 26 degrees under mostly cloudy skies, with winds out of the west at 10 kilometres per hour and humidity at 56 per cent, according to Environment Canada’s station at Lloydminster Airport.
The forecast calls for showers and thunderstorms overnight, with 10 to 20 millimetres of rain possible. Winds may increase to 40 kilometres per hour, gusting to 70, before easing later in the night.
A watch means conditions favour severe weather, not that a storm is confirmed or imminent. Environment Canada issues a warning when severe weather is happening or expected within hours.
