Rendall Park Elementary School marked a milestone March 31 as students took the stage for the 20th annual mini musical.

The production, titled Character Matters, featured students from Grade 1 to 5 and focused on teaching positive behaviour through familiar fairy tale characters.

Melanie McLeod, a Grade 1 teacher at Rendall Park, said the choir program runs throughout the year, with students beginning focused rehearsals in January.

“We are about to perform probably our 20th annual mini musical,” McLeod said. “We have a choir that students Grade 1 to 5 participate in pretty much all year long, but from January on, we prepare for this little mini musical.”

The storyline centred on characters facing challenges tied to personal growth, with each scene offering lessons on behaviour and responsibility.

“One of our scenes is about Humpty Dumpty falling off the wall and he is convinced that it wasn’t his fault,” McLeod said. “So it’s teaching kids about taking responsibility.”

Students performed for both their peers and the public, with an evening show welcoming parents and community members.

McLeod said the goal of the production goes beyond entertainment, giving students both life lessons and a sense of accomplishment after months of preparation.

“There are definitely some valuable life lessons for little kids,” she said. “But also just that these children have committed to this process and have put in a lot of hours to practice and get ready.”

She added staff feedback ahead of the performance reflected strong community support.

“I have had lots of remarks from staff about how excited they are to watch that,” McLeod said. “It just feels really positive to hear that from people because we’ve worked hard.”

The production marked two decades of student performances at Rendall Park, continuing a tradition that blends creativity, teamwork, and lessons that extend beyond the stage.
