The Border City Showdown is coming back to the Lloydminster Exhibition after an absence of at least five years.
The steer and heifer show will hand out $22,000 in prize money this year, organizer Sue Pratte said.
“It was such a big thing at the fair,” Pratte said. “People would come from all over to it.”
The show runs July 7 the Tuesday before the Lloydminster Exhibition, starting at 7 p.m. It will be held outdoors.
Entries are coming in from across Alberta and Saskatchewan. The event is open to competitors of any age.
There are two classes. The heifer class is for female cattle that have not yet had a calf. The steer class is for cattle raised for feed.
Many of the steers shown at the Showdown will go on to the Junior Steer Classic at the Calgary Stampede the following day.
Three judges will score the entries. Organizers are keeping their identities secret until they arrive by limousine on show night.
Winners in each class will take home $5,000.
More than 30 sponsors have backed the event, with donations ranging from $250 to $5,000. Organizers are posting the full sponsor list on the Border City Showdown Facebook page.
The Border City Showdown is run through a committee affiliated with the Lloydminster Exhibition, known locally as LloydEx.

Registration will be accepted up until the day of the show, Pratte said.
