Driver charged after Lloydminster collision on 44 St.

A Monday morning collision in Lloydminster has resulted in an charges being laid under provincial legislation.

At approximately 8:55 a.m. on April 26, a grey sedan rear-ended a white SUV in the westbound passing lane of 44 Street near 62 Avenue, slowing traffic in the area.

Lloydminster RCMP, Lloydminster Fire Rescue, and paramedics from Medavie attended the scene. During the investigation, one of the drivers was administered a roadside test, which they failed.

A Redwater man now faces charges under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act.

Under the Act, a first-occurrence IRS: Fail carries significant consequences.

– The driver faces an immediate 90-day licence suspension, followed by a mandatory 12-month restricted licence period requiring participation in Alberta’s Ignition Interlock Program.

– The vehicle is subject to a 30-day seizure, with towing and storage costs the responsibility of the registered owner.

– A minimum fine of $1,000 plus a 20% victim fine surcharge is also imposed, and the driver must complete the provincially mandated Planning Ahead course.

– Penalties escalate with repeat occurrences and may include criminal charges under the Criminal Code of Canada.
