Four men from Onion Lake Cree Nation are facing charges after fleeing from Onion Lake RCMP, ending in one vehicle in a ditch and a search involving police dog teams and a drone.
Onion Lake RCMP received a report on Aug. 11 that a man had threatened someone and damaged their vehicle. Officers identified the suspect and located him travelling in a vehicle in Onion Lake.
Officers attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle did not stop.
Shortly after, it entered a ditch. Officers arrested one occupant on scene. The other three fled on foot.
RCMP called in Alberta RCMP’s Police Dog Services, along with Saskatchewan RCMP’s Police Dog Services and Remotely Piloted Aircraft System, to help search for the remaining suspects. All three were located and arrested.
Kendall Cardinal, 27, is charged with:
- Mischief over $5,000, damage to property, Section 430(3), Criminal Code
- Flight from peace officer, Section 320.17, Criminal Code
- Resist/obstruct public officer, Section 129(a), Criminal Code
- Uttering threats against a person, Section 264.1(1)(a), Criminal Code
Timothy Weeseekase, 36, is charged with:
- Resist/obstruct public officer, Section 129(a), Criminal Code
- Fail to comply, Section 145(5)(a), Criminal Code
Dennis Chief, 22, is charged with two counts of fail to comply, Section 145(5)(a), Criminal Code.
William Weeseekase, 34, is charged with one count of resist/obstruct public officer, Section 129(a), Criminal Code.
Cardinal, Timothy Weeseekase and Chief appeared in Lloydminster Provincial Court on Aug. 17.
William Weeseekase is scheduled to appear in court in Onion Lake on Oct. 21.
The charges have not been tested in court. All four men are presumed innocent unless and until convicted.
