Lloydminster RCMP have issued eight tickets since Tuesday as officers ramp up patrols in school and park zones for the first week back to classes.

Members have also handed out numerous warnings while focusing on speeding and distracted driving near schools, said S/Sgt. Bruce MacLean, operations NCO with Lloydminster RCMP.

“Since Tuesday morning there has been several school zone patrols with many traffic stops to educate and remind the public the risks of speeding or driving distracted, particularly in school and park zones,” said MacLean.

MacLean said the first week back is about visibility. Officers are reminding drivers that reduced speed limits are back in effect during school hours in those areas.

“Your Lloydminster RCMP is reminding the public the price to pay for not following the law in school zones can be much higher than a ticket,” said MacLean.

MacLean asked drivers to stay slow and attentive at all times, especially near schools and parks, where children can appear quickly and without warning.

“Wherever you are going in a hurry is not worth a child’s life and that text message can wait,” said MacLean.

The Lloydminster RCMP detachment covers the full city under K Division and said patrols in school and park zones will continue through the fall.
