RCMP are running two investigations after a report of a possible firearm locked down Lloydminster Comprehensive High School on Wednesday.

Staff Sgt. Bruce MacLean confirmed the parallel investigations to BorderPulse. One concerns the teen taken into custody. The other examines where the complaint came from.

“A full investigation is ongoing into the incident. The first one is into the accused and a second one is into the origin of the complaint,” said MacLean.

RCMP said in a news release that officers found no firearm or other weapon. No charges have been announced.

The teen is a youth, so the Youth Criminal Justice Act protects the identity. Anyone in custody is presumed innocent unless charged and proven guilty in court.

BorderPulse received a flood of tips, screenshots and questions from the community over the past 24 hours. The outlet put those concerns to MacLean.

The Youth Criminal Justice Act generally bars anyone, including fellow students, parents and members of the public, not just media, from publishing information that would identify a young person dealt with under the Act. That includes names, and it applies to social media posts.

Breaking the ban is an offence. It carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison if prosecuted by indictment.

BorderPulse has removed comments naming the teen from its own pages.

Police found no weapon. Rumours and names can follow a young person long after an investigation ends.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Lloydminster RCMP detachment at 780-808-8300.

BorderPulse will continue to follow both investigations.
