A 35-year-old woman from Dundas, Ont., has died after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 16 west of Vermilion.

According to Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Vermilion officers received multiple calls around 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 30 reporting a pedestrian walking along the highway.

Shortly after, emergency crews were dispatched to a collision involving a pedestrian in the westbound lanes near Range Roads 72 and 73.

Police say the woman was walking in the same direction as traffic while wearing dark-coloured clothing, making her difficult to see in the early morning hours. She succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

Vermilion RCMP, along with an Alberta RCMP collision reconstructionist, continue to investigate.

Though the investigation remains ongoing, police say there is no reason to believe the collision was criminal in nature.

“This is a dreadful situation for all involved, be it the pedestrian, their family, the driver, or the emergency personnel on scene,” said Cpl. Brittany Pegg of the Vermilion RCMP.

“These types of collision investigations are rare in the Vermilion area and I would like to thank the public who was travelling on Highway 16 for being respectful to all of the emergency crews who were working on scene.”

Highway 16 was temporarily closed following the collision but later reopened to traffic.

The name of the deceased has not been released.

The investigation remains ongoing.
