Aug. 20 Lloyd release

Lloydminster RCMP arrested a Medicine Hat man early Aug. 18 after a two-hour chase east of the city ended with a rammed police cruiser.

Chase lasted two hours

Officers received a complaint of a suspected impaired driver around 1 a.m. They tried to stop the vehicle on Highway 16 on the city’s east side.

The driver refused to stop and fled. The pursuit lasted about two hours.

Police used a tire deflation device to try to stop the vehicle. When that failed, officers used a tactical vehicle contact to end the chase.

The suspect vehicle rammed a police cruiser during the stop. No members of the public or police were hurt.

Suspect faces four charges

RCMP arrested Taylor Burke, 25, of Medicine Hat, Alta. He faces four charges: dangerous operation of a conveyance, flight from a peace officer, refusal of a lawful demand and assaulting a police officer with a weapon.

A justice of the peace remanded Burke into custody. He is scheduled to appear in Saskatchewan Provincial Court in Lloydminster on Aug. 24.

“The RCMP recognizes that police pursuits and attempts to stop fleeing vehicles can present significant risks to the public,” said Sgt. Christopher Byford of the Lloydminster RCMP.

“Officers continually assess the circumstances and utilize available tactics and resources with the safety of the public, police officers and the suspect as a priority,” Byford said.

The charges have not been proven in court.
