Lloydminster RCMP officers started wearing new navy blue uniform shirts on Aug. 15, part of a national rollout happening one province at a time.

The change to the blue applies to frontline officers at Alberta detachments, including Lloydminster’s, according to the Mounties.

Officers may keep wearing the previous grey shirts for now. Residents could see either colour on duty for the foreseeable future.

The RCMP said in a media release that the new colour might cause some confusion. The force also pointed to recent incidents involving people impersonating police officers.

Anyone unsure about an officer’s identity can ask for identification on the spot.

Residents can also call their local detachment’s non-emergency line to confirm whether an officer is legitimately on duty in their area.

The blue shirt change is part of a broader effort to modernize the national police force uniform. Saskatchewan RCMP officers began wearing the same navy shirts starting in July, meaning both sides of the bi-provincial city are now transitioning together.
