Lloydminster’s Wings and Wheels show nearly doubled its turnout this year, drawing 106 vehicles, aircraft and campers to the Lloydminster Municipal Airport.
That’s up from 54 at last year’s event.
More than four car clubs took part, including the Lloydminster Auto Club, Just Kruzin’, the Lloydminster Motor Club and Bent Rodz.
Paige Lozowchuk, manager of Lloydminster Paint and Supply, who organized the event, said feedback from the day focused on the location and the mix of vehicles and aircraft on display.
People travelled from roughly a two-hour radius of Lloydminster to attend. Organizers could not confirm exactly how far the furthest visitors came.
One of the day’s biggest draws was the pairing of old and new machines on the tarmac.
Lloydminster Fire Rescue brought its 1927 Chevrolet firetruck, parked alongside Kenar Transport’s brand new 2027 Peterbilt 589. Together, the two trucks spanned 100 years of automotive history.
The vintage firetruck lost a hub cap on the drive to the show after crews pushed it to a safe, legal highway speed. Crews later recovered the hub cap and reattached it to the truck.
Lloydminster Fire Rescue also drew a crowd with a live vehicle extrication demonstration, showing spectators the steps crews take during a rescue.
Storm clouds tracked parallel to Lloydminster through the day, sparing the event from severe weather.
High winds did move in, making conditions unsafe for some pilots to fly in.
Lozowchuk said the wind cut into fly-in attendance, but crews, volunteers and spectators stayed through the gusts.
The show’s pancake breakfast raised $2,500 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lloydminster.
Organizers say more funds were raised and will be announced at an upcoming Lloydminster Auto Club car show.
Calgary Pilot Supply donated a set of pilot log books, which organizers passed along to Border City Aviation to support future pilots in the Lloydminster area.
Organizers thanked a long list of sponsors and partners and said planning is well underway for next years event.
Lloydminster Paint & Supplies will mark 50 years in business next year, and organizers say that milestone will be part of the show.
