Alberta RCMP removed 122 impaired drivers from provincial roads over the Victoria Day long weekend, as enhanced traffic enforcement ran from May 15 to 18.
Six people died in collisions during the same period. There were also 25 injury collisions reported across the province.
Of the 122 drivers removed for impairment, 71 received Immediate Roadside Sanctions for failing breath screening – the most serious category under Alberta’s IRS framework. Another 37 received WARN-range suspensions and nine received 24-hour suspensions. Five novice or commercial drivers were removed under zero-tolerance rules.
Officers also issued 1,204 tickets over the four days. Speeding accounted for the vast majority – 1,142 tickets. Distracted driving resulted in 26 tickets and seatbelt violations accounted for 36.
“The Alberta RCMP will continue to have an enhanced presence on provincial roadways every long weekend,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, Alberta RCMP Traffic. “Everyone has a role to play – choices like driving sober, staying focused, and buckling up can save lives.”
