School zones across Lloydminster are back in effect this week as students return to class, and RCMP is reminding drivers to slow down.
The speed limit in school and playground zones is 30 kilometres an hour. School zones apply from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on school days. Playground zones run from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, according to the City of Lloydminster.
U-turns are not allowed in either zone while the reduced speed limit is active.
RCMP detachments across Alberta and Saskatchewan are sharing similar reminders as the new school year begins. Traffic tends to get heavier near schools, with more children walking, biking and being dropped off.
Drivers are asked to give themselves extra time and watch for pedestrians, especially children who may not judge traffic speed the way adults do.
Drivers must stop for a school bus displaying flashing red lights and an extended stop arm. Traffic in both directions has to stop, and can only move again once the lights stop flashing.
RCMP also asks drivers to leave extra room around buses, which stop often and without warning. Drivers should avoid stopping or parking in posted no-stopping and no-parking zones near schools, and should not pass, make U-turns or three-point turns in school zones.
Students are encouraged to plan their walking or biking route ahead of time, and to put away phones and remove earbuds before crossing streets. Crossing at intersections, crosswalks or with a crossing guard is recommended, along with making eye contact with drivers before stepping into the road, even when they have the right of way.
RCMP is asking drivers, students and families to work together to keep the return to school safe for everyone this fall.
