Three men face firearms charges after a Maymont chase, Saskatchewan RCMP said in a news release Friday.

A police dog found a firearm in a ditch near Cando, Sask., after the suspects ran from their truck.

Police say the incident began at about 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 20. Saskatoon Police Service’s Air Support Unit was tracking a truck that Corman Park Police Service had reported driving dangerously on Highway 16 near Saskatoon.

The truck stopped on Baljennie Road, south of Maymont. The driver got out and discharged a firearm into the air, RCMP said. The driver then got back in and drove off.

Battlefords RCMP officers deployed a tire deflation device. The truck ran over it and kept going.

At about 2 a.m., the truck stopped in a field near Cando. The occupants got out and fled on foot. Officers located and arrested three adult men.

Saskatoon Police Service’s Police Dog Services found a firearm in the ditch nearby.

The Battlefords Serious Crimes Unit took over the investigation and laid the charges.

Walker Higgs, 23, of Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation, faces one count each of careless use of a firearm, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm while prohibited, failing to comply with a probation order and operating a motor vehicle while prohibited.

Dennis Higgs, 24, of Saskatoon, faces one count each of possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle and possession of a firearm while prohibited. He also faces two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

Darnell Starblanket, 25, of Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation, faces one count each of possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle and failing to comply with a probation order.

All three appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on Oct. 21. Battlefords and Saskatoon Forensic Identification Services also assisted.

The charges are allegations and have not been tested in court. The accused are presumed innocent.

RCMP did not say whether the men remain in custody or when they return to court.
