A 24-year-old man is facing nearly a dozen charges after RCMP say he fled officers and discharged a firearm on Red Pheasant Cree Nation.
According to Battlefords RCMP, officers first responded around 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 14 to a report that an armed adult male had been involved in an altercation with a security guard and fled in a vehicle.
Police began searching for the male and the vehicle.
About 40 minutes later, officers received another report that a male on a snowmobile had shot at a residence on the First Nation.
Officers responded immediately and located a male with a firearm on a snowmobile. RCMP attempted a traffic stop, but the male allegedly failed to stop, discarded the firearm and tried to flee.
He was arrested at the scene.
RCMP say their investigation determined the male was the same individual involved in the earlier altercation. Police later determined a firearm had also been discharged at an individual.
As a result of the investigation, Mackenzie Wahobin, 24, of Red Pheasant Cree Nation, faces charges including:
- one count of flight from a peace officer
- one count of uttering threats
- one count of discharge firearm with intent
- one count of possession of a weapon contrary to order
- one count of carrying a concealed weapon
- one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- one count of possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number
- one count of careless use of a firearm
- one count of operation of a conveyance while prohibited
- one count of possession of a prohibited weapon knowing possession was unauthorized
- one count of unlicensed possession of a prohibited weapon with ammunition
Wahobin appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on Feb. 16.
The investigation remains ongoing.
