Firefighters from across the Border region spent the weekend training for one of the most dangerous seasonal emergencies, ice water rescues.

According to Lloydminster Fire Rescue (LFR), 12 members completed training and certification in ice water rescue, working through realistic scenarios in extreme cold conditions.

“The students encountered some chilly temperatures during the practical training scenarios of rescuing someone who has fallen through the ice – the weather and cold water brought realism to the training,” Lloydminster Fire Rescue said in a social media post.

The training was delivered in partnership with Trans-Care Rescue Ltd., focusing on building the skills needed to respond quickly when seconds matter.

Meanwhile, Protective Services – County of Vermilion River said firefighters from across the county also took part in similar training, hosted by Arctic Response Canada Ltd., highlighting the regional push to strengthen emergency response.

“The purpose of this course was to teach firefighters how to properly conduct a rescue operation for a victim that has fallen through ice,” said County representatives in a social media post.

Crews practised both shore-based rescues and entering the water to retrieve victims, along with post-rescue care, including treating hypothermia and preparing patients for transport.

The training comes at a critical time of year, as fluctuating temperatures weaken ice conditions across the region.

Emergency crews are now reminding residents to stay off storm water ponds and other bodies of water as spring approaches.

“Remember to stay off the storm water ponds as the weather is changing as spring approaches – if you see someone in the water call 911 immediately – keep a visual on their location and wait for emergency services to arrive,” stated Lloydminster Fire Rescue.
