RCMP STOCK 3

Turtleford RCMP are investigating after a firework was set off inside an inn in St. Walburg late Monday night, triggering an evacuation and a response from local fire and emergency services.

St. Walburg and District Fire Rescue was dispatched at approximately 10:15 p.m. on May 4 after reports of smoke inside the building. Twelve firefighters responded to find all occupants had already evacuated safely.

Crews entered the building to assess the situation.

“Upon size up and entry, it was deemed someone had thrown a smoke bomb into the building then left, causing the alarms to be set off,” St. Walburg Fire Department said.

RCMP took over the investigation at the scene. Their findings told a slightly different story.

“Investigation determined a firework had been set off in a hallway at the inn,” said an RCMP “F” Division media relations officer. “No fire was reported to police in relation to this incident, and no injuries were reported by the inn’s occupants.”

Westmed Ambulance was on standby throughout the response should firefighters have encountered a working fire.

Turtleford RCMP continue to investigate.

Anyone with information to help the investigation is asked to contact Turtleford RCMP at 310-RCMP. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or saskcrimestoppers.com.
