Maidstone RCMP responded to 143 calls for service between May 21 and June 3 – and not all of them were what you might expect.
The detachment’s latest report covers everything from a semi-serious impaired driving arrest at 183 km/h to a woman who could not figure out why church hymns were filling her home.
Members quickly solved that one. Her neighbours had accidentally paired their device to her Bluetooth speaker.
That was among the gentler calls. On May 26, a vehicle on Highway 17 was reported to have a rifle pointed out the window. Multiple officers patrolled the area. Nobody was found, and there was not enough information to continue the investigation.
A week later, officers on the same highway stopped a driver doing 183 km/h. A mandatory breath sample registered a fail. Blood alcohol samples at the Lloydminster detachment came back at 140 mg per cent and 130 mg per cent. Charges followed.
Wildlife also made an appearance. A woman in the RM of Britannia called Maidstone RCMP on May 28 after a mother bear and her cubs parked on her front lawn and refused to let her leave. Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management was notified. Whether the bears complied is not noted in the report.
Then there was the man in the RM of Britannia found wearing a coat with police markings on May 31. Officers located him, removed the markings, and closed the file. The man said he had picked it up at a Goodwill store in Edmonton. Nothing criminal.
A dead moose on Highway 16 east of Maidstone on May 29 turned into a two-vehicle situation before officers could even arrive. A second vehicle struck the carcass en route and had to be towed. No injuries in either incident.
Among the more serious files: a $60,000 family fraud complaint in the RM of Wilton, a break and enter discovered in Paynton after the property owner returned from an extended absence, and an ongoing extortion investigation that began May 21.
Officers also dealt with a theft of approximately 500 feet of heavy power cord from an asphalt plant near Lashburn. The company had shut down due to rain. When an employee returned, the cord was gone.
On June 3, copper cable casings were found dumped in the RM of Wilton. The size was not consistent with local thefts. That file remains open.
The report also included 30 provincial traffic offences and four vehicle collisions over the two-week period.
Anyone with information on any of the incidents is asked to contact Maidstone RCMP or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
