A Canadian Soldier Fought

1914 to 1918 — trenches all around,
Vimy, Flanders, Somme — all on foreign ground.
Thousands lay neatly in rows of simple plots,
During this conflict, a Canadian soldier fought.

’39 to ’45 — it happened once again,
War took over the world in far-off lands.
Dieppe, Normandy, and Falaise — freedom was bought,
By us, when a Canadian soldier fought.

’50 to ’53 — the forgotten Korean War,
North and South broke out, costing hundreds more.
Operations Minden, Commando, and Pepperpot,
An armistice stands now, where a Canadian soldier fought.

’53 to 2001 — Bosnia, Cyprus, Egypt — a few,
Places where peacekeeping was the task to do.
The Middle East and Medak Pocket — peace was sought,
During these operations, a Canadian soldier fought.

2001 deployed in Afghanistan,
“The Sandbox” to our young women and men.
158 more — families at home distraught,
In this place, a Canadian soldier fought.

From Flanders, Dieppe, Korea, Bosnia, to Kandahar,
Canadian soldiers have traveled to lands near and far.
So when you think of peace, of which we have a lot,
Know it was because a Canadian soldier fought.
