A rock slide has forced the closure of Highway 16 in both directions approximately 12 kilometres west of Jasper, Alta., RCMP said Saturday.
There are no reports of vehicles struck or injuries.
Jasper RCMP said the closure is supporting a Parks Canada-led effort to clear the highway and manage a significant volume of traffic – including commercial semi trucks – currently affected by the blockage.
RCMP said the delay is expected to be significant. No timeframe has been given for when the highway will reopen.
Assessments of the slide area must be completed before the road can be declared safe for travel.
Motorists are urged to find alternate routes while clearing and safety work continues.
