North Battleford traffic stop leads to weapons charges

A routine patrol turned up a sawed-off gun, bear spray and drug paraphernalia, RCMP say.


Four North Battleford residents face a combined 15 charges after Battlefords RCMP seized a sawed-off firearm and other weapons during a traffic stop.

Battlefords RCMP were conducting proactive patrols on 100 Street in North Battleford on July 7 at about 8 a.m. when officers stopped a vehicle.

Investigators determined multiple people in the vehicle were breaching court-ordered conditions.

Three men and one woman were arrested at the scene. The woman resisted arrest. Officers were able to take her into custody safely, RCMP said.

Officers searched the vehicle and located:

  • a sawed-off firearm
  • bear spray
  • a knife
  • drug trafficking paraphernalia

Jayaleo Pete, 30, Christopher Fiddler, 40, Kiandra Jackson, 25, and Dale Starchief, 25, all of North Battleford, are each charged with:

  • one count of possession of a firearm, weapon, device or ammunition in a motor vehicle, section 94(1) of the Criminal Code
  • one count of unsafe storage of firearms, section 86(2)
  • two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, section 88(1)
  • one count of unauthorized possession of a firearm, section 91(1)
  • two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, section 90(1)

Fiddler faces additional charges of:

  • one count of possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, section 92(1)
  • two counts of failing to comply with a probation order, section 733.1(1)
  • two counts of weapons possession contrary to an order, section 117.01(1)

Fiddler was also arrested on an outstanding warrant from the Edmonton Police Service.

Jackson faces additional charges of:

  • one count of possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, section 92(1)
  • one count of resisting or obstructing a peace officer, section 129(a)
  • one count of weapons possession contrary to an order, section 117.01(1)

All four accused appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on July 8.

None of the charges have been proven in court.
