A tornado touched down northeast of Tulliby Lake on Saturday afternoon, damaging several buildings and knocking out power to the area, according to the County of Vermilion River.

The region was under a severe weather watch from Environment and Climate Change Canada at the time. Alberta Emergency Alerts issued a critical alert at 5:33 p.m. warning of a possible tornado northeast of the hamlet.

Protective services officers responded immediately, the county said in a release. They co-ordinated with the Alberta Emergency Management Agency, emergency responders, local industry and utility companies.

No injuries have been reported. Several structures sustained damage, including industrial and agricultural sites.

Power was knocked out to affected customers but has since been restored.

Some roads may still have fallen trees. Crews are assessing the damage and working to clear obstacles.

The public is asked to avoid the area while workers deal with remaining hazards.

Investigators with Western University’s Northern Tornado Project are expected to examine the site. The county said they have confirmed a tornado touched down near Tulliby Lake.

Residents and visitors are asked to monitor the County of Vermilion River’s official Facebook page and website for verified updates.
