Alberta’s government has provided students some relief by cancelling January 2026 diploma exams and Grade 9 Provincial Achievement Tests. The decision is aimed at helping students and teachers recover lost classroom time following the recent teacher strike.

The province said the move will allow schools to focus on learning and support students as they return to normal schedules.

The cancellation will not affect students’ ability to apply for or attend post-secondary programs. Those who do not write at a later date will receive their school-awarded mark as their final course grade. A notation will be added to transcripts confirming no diploma exam was written.

Education officials said the decision ensures there is no impact on graduation or post-secondary eligibility.

School authorities are expected to meet all learning outcomes for the year and have been given flexibility to adjust school calendars as needed. Families will be notified directly by their schools if schedules change.
