Lloydminster has recorded the fifth-highest number of confirmed overdose deaths in Saskatchewan since 2020, according to new data from the *Saskatchewan Coroners Service.
The report lists 44 confirmed drug toxicity deaths in the city over the past six years. Only Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert and Moose Jaw reported higher totals in the province.

Rising toll over six years
Coroner data shows nine deaths in 2020, followed by seven in 2021. The number climbed to 12 in 2022 and 11 in 2023. The totals dropped to three in 2024 and two so far in 2025.
These figures represent deaths that occurred in Lloydminster regardless of the individual’s home address. Alberta-side and Saskatchewan-side fatalities are included in the totals.

How Lloydminster compares
Regina recorded the highest number of overdose deaths with 858 confirmed between 2020 and 2025. Saskatoon followed with 530. Prince Albert reported 73 and Moose Jaw recorded 52.
With 44 deaths, Lloydminster sits ahead of larger or comparable centres such as Yorkton, North Battleford and Estevan.

Impact on the community
Local agencies say the numbers reflect broader provincial trends tied to fentanyl and toxic drug supply. The coroner report shows synthetic opioids remain a leading factor across Saskatchewan.
Community groups continue to call for expanded treatment access, early intervention and support for families affected by addiction.

*The Saskatchewan Coroners Service updates overdose data monthly. Future totals for 2024 and 2025 may change as investigations conclude.
