TEC heavy load 1

Two oversized industrial loads will move through east-central Alberta on Jan. 12 and Jan. 15 as they are transported to Lloydminster, with motorists advised to expect delays along major highways.

The loads will depart Tofield at 9 a.m. both days and are expected to reach the Lloydminster area by about 2 p.m.

On each move, two oversized loads will travel together under escort by guide vehicles. Due to their size and weight, the convoy will travel below posted speed limits at a maximum speed of 60 km/h and will use the full width of the highway, including the shoulder.

Each load consists of a coke drum shell used in the upgrading of heavy crude into refined products such as gasoline and diesel. The cylindrical units measure approximately 7.4 metres wide, nine metres high, and 52 metres long, with each weighing about 222,600 kilograms including support equipment. The specialized trailers transporting the units are equipped with 144 wheels.

Traffic disruptions are expected along Highway 14, Highway 36, and Highway 16 during both moves, particularly as the oversized convoy passes through rural intersections and highway interchanges.
