In news:

A small fire had Lloydminster Fire and Rescue responding to the 4300 block of 39 street last night. It was brought under control quickly according to officials on scene.

Lakeland College will not host the women’s volleyball provincial championship this season following a decision by the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Conference Council.

ACAC confirmed the decision was made without formal criteria and includes no appeal process. The league says the ruling was separate from earlier sanctions and acknowledges it will negatively impact student-athletes.

A collision yesterday afternoon on Highway 21/303 north of McLaren involved a transport truck and a passenger vehicle. According to RCMP the roadway was closed for a short period of time while the scene was investigated and cleared. No word on how many were injured in the collision.

Finally, Mother Teresa Early Childhood Education Centre is launching their Donut campaign on Feb. 1, ahead of this is their community organization night on Jan. 27 at the school. Organizers say this is all about showing kids they can make a difference, even at their age.

Commodities

March spring wheat closed at $5.08 per bushel, down about 2 cents on the day.

March canola closed at $646.80 per tonne, up more than $10.

March feeder cattle closed at $359.38 per hundredweight, gaining nearly $2.

March oats closed at $2.93 per bushel, lower on the session.

Feed barley is trading around $237 per tonne in central Alberta, according to the latest Alberta Agriculture weekly market review.

Yellow peas are trading around $255 per tonne, based on the same report.


Energy Stocks

Western Canadian Select crude was trading at US$45.43 per barrel, slightly higher on the day.

West Texas Intermediate crude was trading around US$60.75 per barrel, also edging higher.

Shares of Cenovus Energy rose Wednesday, finishing up more than 4 per cent.

Shares of Strathcona Resources also closed higher.


Traffic:

Highway 16 on the Alberta side is considered bare as well as all the secondary roads and visibility is good. Headed east, Lloydminster to Maidstone is partially covered, visibility however appears to be good. If you are headed north to Onion Lake as well as out towards St. Walburg and Turtleford areas you can expect partially covered roads in that region as well, the issue at Deer Creek Bridge is ongoing.

In town, progress is ongoing on street clearing operations, they were seen in the area of 25 street and 52 Ave. yesterday afternoon as well as clearing windrows still near Lloyd Comprehensive.

Weather:
As we said off the top, baby it’s cold outside. The following numbers are not a typo or glitch I promise. It will -25 this afternoon. This cold snap stays with us through Sunday, when it warms up to -18! As of 6 a.m. at the airport it’s -29 feeling like -36 with a 8 km/h wind out of the north northwest.

Swimming and Snowflakes –
Jan. 24 starting at 5:30 the Bioclean Aquatic Centre turns into a winter wonderland scene as they put on Swimming and Snowflakes, courtesy of Walkin’ on Water. Tickets are required and can be purchased at the Bioclean or Walkin’ on Water.

Outdoor Winter Classic –
The Jr. Rustlers will take on the Phantoms on Jan. 24 at the Cenovus Hub outside rink in the Outdoor Classic. You can skate with the Rustlers at 12:30. The games are at 9:30 a.m., 1:30 and 5 p.m. It’s all in support of I love Alberta Boobs.

The Calgary flames lost to the Pittsburg Penguins last night 4-1, those steel city players come to Edmonton tonight to take on the Oilers.
The Lloydminster Bobcats take on Grand Prairie at home on Friday night.
The Lakeland College Woman’s Rustlers hockey team take on NAIT Ooks Friday night at the community rink at the Hub.
The Bandits are off until Sunday when they take on Vermilion Tigers at 5 p.m. at the Hub.
