Good morning Border region, it’s Wednesday Jan. 21 and this is your Border Brief. No weather watches are currently in effect, but with the projected weather, that is likely to change today so stay tuned for the update. Now to everything you need to know as you head out the door.

In news:
RCMP in Kitscoty have described the two men who injured their officers last week while trying to escape capture as “prolific offenders”. They now face serious charges including two counts of Assaulting a police officer. This is on top of the numerous violations of previous release order charges as well. You can read the RCMP message to the public on our front page.

The Lakeland College Rustler’s Woman’s Hockey team members took time out of their day last week to skate with kids from Father Gorman, the gallery is on the website.

Yesterday afternoon the RM of Britannia issued a press release regarding the decision to replace Lloyd Rescue Squad with Britannia Fire Department. They cited coming provincial legislation as to why it had to be done. More on that later today.

Commodities

March spring wheat closed at $5.10 per bushel, down about 8 cents on the day.

March canola closed at $636.20 per tonne, slipping nearly $3.

March feeder cattle closed at $357.68 per hundredweight, edging higher.

March oats closed at $3.00 per bushel, lower on the session.

Feed barley is trading around $237 per tonne in central Alberta, according to the latest Alberta Agriculture weekly market review.

Yellow peas are trading around $255 per tonne, based on the same report.


Energy Stocks

Western Canadian Select crude was trading at US$45.32 per barrel, modestly higher on the day.

West Texas Intermediate crude was trading around US$59.73 per barrel, lower at close.

Shares of Cenovus Energy finished lower Tuesday.

Shares of Strathcona Resources also closed lower.


Traffic:

Highway 16 in both directions considered partially covered for the most part , visibility however appears to be good as the winds have died down. If you are headed north to Onion Lake as well as out towards St. Walburg and Turtleford areas you can expect partially covered roads in that region as well, the issue at Deer Creek Bridge is ongoing.

Today, we are headed to a high of -12 with cloudy skies and a 30 percent chance of snow throughout the day. Just a heads up, tomorrow through to Saturday highs are in the mid -20’s, if you have anything you need to do outside, today might be the day and don’t forget to plug your vehicles in tonight. As of 6:00 a.m. at the airport it’s -15 feeling like -24 with the winds out of the northwest at 21ย gusting toย 30ย km/h.

Upcoming Events:
British Home Children presentation
For 79 years, Britain sent 118,000 children throughout Canada as indentured labour. Over 4 million of their descendants live in Canada today, including Saskatchewan and Alberta. You may even know some of them. The Lloydminster Museum and Archives is hosting a presentation on the topic Jan. 24 from 1:30 to 3:30, registration is required.

The donuts are coming –
Mother Teresa’s donut campaign aims to raise over $10,000 dollars this year to bring their five year total to 40,000 raised. You can get your kids designed donuts at Sobeys starting Feb. 1.

Firefighters appreciation banquet –
Islay Curling Club is hosting a Bonspiel in support of the County of Vermilion River Fire Service at the Islay Curling Rink on January 21st – 25th. The firefighter appreciation banquet is Friday night. Tickets are $35 for age 13 and up, $15 for ages 6-12 and free for 5 and under. The Lloydminster Bobcats take on Grand Prairie at home on Friday night.
The Lakeland College Woman’s Rustlers hockey team take on NAIT Ooks Friday night at the community rink at the Hub.
The Bandits are off until Sunday when they take on Vermilion Tigers at 5 p.m. at the Hub.
The Oilers lost to the New Jersey Devils 2-1 last night at home. The Calgary Flames host the Pittsburg Penguins tonight.
