Good morning Border region, it’s Friday, Jan. 23 and this is your Border Brief. In news:

Buses are cancelled, do your kids get to stay home? both the Catholic and Public school divisions have cancelled buses due to the extreme cold this morning. Schools remain open.

RCMP members from locations east of us took part in a Saskatchewan provincial wide blitz from Jan. 14-18. They checked over 400 cars. That initiative resulted in 10 roadside licence suspensions, four Criminal Code impaired driving charges, the impoundment of 16 vehicles and one ATV, 71 tickets and 111 warnings.

The New RCMP High Risk Child Sex Offender Database is open to public, it’s designed to help keep communities safer and is fully accessible to the public.

Commodities

March spring wheat closed at $5.15 per bushel, gaining about 8 cents on the day.

March canola closed at $647.20 per tonne, little changed.

March feeder cattle closed at $359.28 per hundredweight, essentially flat.

March oats closed at $2.91 per bushel, lower on the session.

Feed barley is trading around $237 per tonne in central Alberta, according to the latest Alberta Agriculture weekly market review.

Yellow peas are trading around $255 per tonne, based on the same report.


Energy Stocks

Western Canadian Select crude was trading at US$43.88 per barrel, sharply lower on the day.

West Texas Intermediate crude was trading around US$59.81 per barrel, higher in early trading.

Shares of Cenovus Energy finished slightly lower Thursday.

Shares of Strathcona Resources also closed modestly lower.


Traffic:

There is nothing but bare roads in the region this morning. Only thing of note is the issue at Deer Creek Bridge is ongoing.

City snow clearing efforts:
As of end of day Monday, January 19, 96,000 cubic yards of snow have been removed, roughly enough to fill 30 Olympic-size swimming pools!
Completed zones: Pink, Orange, with a few cul-de-sacs remaining, Green, with a few cul-de-sacs remaining
Zones in progress: Blue, Yellow. The Industrial park plowing will begin Saturday, January 24.

Weather:
So, how cold is it? right now it’s -32 feeling like -43 . Our high today is only -26, with a windchill, it’s expected to stay well below -30, but it will be sunny. Exposed skin will start to freeze in minutes, this includes your animals. If it’s too cold for your skin, it’s too cold for theirs.

Upcoming Events:

Swimming and Snowflakes –
Jan. 24 starting at 5:30 the Bioclean Aquatic Centre turns into a winter wonderland scene as they put on Swimming and Snowflakes, courtesy of Walkin’ on Water. Tickets are required and can be purchased at the Bioclean or Walkin’ on Water.

Outdoor Winter Classic –
The Jr. Rustlers will take on the Phantoms on Jan. 24 at the Cenovus Hub outside rink in the Outdoor Classic. You can skate with the Rustlers at 12:30. The games are at 9:30 a.m., 1:30 and 5 p.m. It’s all in support of I love Alberta Boobs.

Firefighter appreciation breakfast:
County of Vermilion River firefighter appreciation banquet is tonight. Tickets are still available and doors open in Islay at 5 p.m. You can get more information on this at the County of Vermilion River Protective Services page.

The Lloydminster Bobcats take on Grand Prairie Storm at home tonight at 7 p.m.
The Lakeland College Woman’s Rustlers hockey team take on NAIT Ooks tonight at the community rink at the Hub.
The Bandits are off until Sunday when they take on Vermilion Tigers at 5 p.m. at the Hub.
The Edmonton Oilers lost 6-2.
