A quiet Bonnyville neighbourhood was locked down Thursday morning after police received a report of a man sitting in a vehicle with a firearm in plain view.
Bonnyville RCMP were called shortly before 9 a.m. on April 9 to 46 Avenue near 39 Street, where a male was reportedly seen with a long gun resting on his lap.
A shelter-in-place order was quickly issued for nearby residents and a school as officers moved to contain the situation.
Police surrounded the area and safely took the man into custody without incident. No injuries were reported.
The shelter-in-place was lifted shortly after the arrest.
Chad Jonathon Blackman, 31, of Cold Lake, is now facing the following charges:
- unlawful possession of a firearm
- failing to comply with release orders
- possession for the purpose of trafficking controlled drugs and substances
RCMP brought in multiple specialized units during the response, including the Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services, Air Services, and the Crime Reduction Unit, along with officers from several nearby detachments. EMS crews were also placed on standby.
Police are asking anyone with information about crime in the Bonnyville area to contact RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
Charges have not been proven in court.
