Update: Feb. 10, 2026 – Merko’s charges have been re-laid under a different docket number than original. His next court date regarding these charges is April 27, 2026.
In May of 2025, David Merko was arrested and faced multiple charges for allegedly damaging Bonnyville RCMP vehicles using a trackhoe and uttering threats towards police officers.
David Merko was scheduled to appear in Bonnyville Court of Justice on Aug. 5, 2025, for an election and plea hearing in relation to the incident. However, those charges were withdrawn
Court records show the accused was not present for the appearance. A warrant was initially in place but was recalled the same day.

The file disposition is listed as charges “withdrawn – process,” with a final disposition date of Aug. 5, 2025. No plea was entered, and the matter did not proceed to trial. No further explanation was provided by the courts regarding why they were withdrawn. A withdrawal does not represent a finding of guilt or innocence.
Criminal charges can be withdrawn for a variety of reasons, including evidentiary concerns, witness issues, Charter considerations, or procedural matters, and a withdrawal does not represent a finding of guilt or innocence.
The Border Pulse has contacted Alberta Justice seeking clarification on why the charges were withdrawn and whether the matter remains active under another court file.
