A large black bear has been visiting a Vermilion neighbourhood overnight, caught on a residential security camera near Park Dr.

The image, captured on a Blink camera overnight May 20, shows the animal moving through a residential property in the west end. It was shared to a public Facebook group Wednesday morning.

RCMP say they have no official incident on record, but have received information suggesting the bear may be leaving the local park after dark and moving through the west and north ends of town.

Town of Vermilion officials have been made aware of the situation.

They had nothing on record until we spoke with them, however, they now manage the park and we will be alerting staff staff. The also want residents to be bear aware.

Snow said town staff who work in and around the park will be notified to watch for activity.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife advises residents to take the following precautions when a bear is active in their area:

  • Keep garbage and recyclables in bear-resistant, airtight containers
  • Do not put bins out overnight
  • Bring in bird feeders and clean up any spilled seed
  • Keep compost indoors or in a sealed container
  • Remove pet food, barbecues, and other attractants from outside
  • Keep dogs on a leash at all times
  • Never approach a bear – back away slowly and find shelter in a building or vehicle
  • Keep children close to home and supervised, especially at dusk and dawn

Anyone who sees a bear or wildlife posing a public safety risk is asked to call Alberta Fish and Wildlife report a poacher line, it’s manned 24/7 at 1-800-642-3800 after hours or 310-0000 during business hours.

Wildlife officials warn that if food sources remain available in the area, the bear is likely to return. You can also contact Vermilion town staff if you have concerns about issues inside the community.
