Battlefords RCMP say a 22-year-old man is facing multiple charges after officers recorded a vehicle travelling 176 km/h and allege the driver tried to flee.
The incident happened Feb. 21 at about 11 a.m. on Highway 29 near North Battleford.
Police say officers spotted a vehicle heading north at a high rate of speed and attempted a traffic stop. The driver allegedly continued southbound on Highway 29, reaching speeds up to 176 km/h.
Officers followed at what RCMP described as a safe speed and distance.
Police say the vehicle turned onto a rural road and continued driving at dangerous speeds despite winter road conditions. Additional officers later located the vehicle back on Highway 29 travelling south.
When the vehicle turned down another rural road with a dead end, officers set up a tire deflation device at the intersection of Highway 29 and the rural road where the suspect vehicle was last seen.
According to RCMP, the vehicle returned to the intersection and drove over the device before veering off the road and stopping near the edge of a frozen body of water.
Battlefords RCMP and Saskatchewan RCMP Police Dog Services contained the vehicle. Three adult men exited.
Police say two were arrested without incident. The third man allegedly ran toward the middle of the frozen body of water before being arrested. RCMP identified him as the driver.
