Nokota Pooyak has been committed to stand trial in connection with a triple homicide on the Saskatchewan side of Lloydminster.

A preliminary hearing concluded on Jan. 28 when Crown and defence entered a consent committal, sending the matter directly to the Court of King’s Bench for Saskatchewan in Battleford.

No trial date has been set.

Pooyak, of Sweetgrass First Nation, is charged with three counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Brent Peters, 66, and his sons Matthew, 32, and Brennan, 34.

Police were called to a residence around 5:51 p.m. on Sept. 11, 2024 for a well-being check. Officers located three deceased men inside the home.

RCMP have previously described the killings as targeted.

Pooyak was arrested in January 2025 by the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre, where he had been in custody on unrelated charges.

A consent committal means both Crown and defence agreed there was sufficient evidence to proceed to trial without completing the preliminary hearing.

The case will now move through pre-trial procedures in King’s Bench before a trial date is scheduled.

Pooyak remains in custody.

All charges have yet to be proven in court.
