Steelers program sends three players to next level

Three players from the Lloydminster PWM Steelers are stepping onto bigger ice this year, and the program’s head coach says it is proof of what a small border city can build. Alivia Foster and Kenzie Zidar have both earned invitations to a Team Alberta summer camp. Mya MacDonald, a defenceman who joined the Steelers for her final season of U18 AAA hockey, is headed to the University of Arizona to play NCAA hockey. Dan Auchenburg is general manager of the Lloydminster Minor Hockey Association and head coach of the Steelers. He said the milestones reflect years of work, not a

Sask. Crops advance quickly in hot, dry weather

Hot conditions across much of Saskatchewan pushed crops ahead rapidly last week, though the heat helped some fields catch up while stressing others in drier areas. Crop conditions remain variable across the province, with most crops still rated in good condition overall. Humid weather slowed haying in places, though producers in the south made progress, with some wrapping up entirely. Fungicide application is winding down for later-seeded crops, and some producers are turning their attention to harvest prep. Rainfall was limited outside a few scattered thunderstorms. The Coleville area received the most precipitation at 25 millimetres, followed by Calder at

Column: Digital platforms 101

This is the weekly opinion column by owner/founder of Border Pulse. There’s a version of this business that used to be simple. You wrote the story, put it in the paper, and people paid a quarter to find out what happened. That version is gone, and it isn’t coming back. What’s replaced it is a lot more complicated, and most readers have no idea how complicated it’s gotten. Start with the headline itself. Ten years ago, a headline’s only job was to tell you what happened. Now it has to do that while surviving a platform that buries you if

No state of emergency planned for overdose surge

The City of Lloydminster is not considering a State of Local Emergency in response to last week’s overdose surge, according to communications coordinator Nyah Foote. In a statement dated July 22, Foote said that declaration exists to grant extraordinary powers under the Emergency Management Act during sudden, extraordinary emergencies, not as a route to request provincial support. Lloydminster Fire Rescue responded to 16 overdose-related calls between July 14 and July 16, Foote confirmed. That figure counts fire calls specifically and is not necessarily the same measure as the overdose total described by EMS sources. Foote said firefighters also conducted precautionary
