A Lloydminster man is facing robbery charges after RCMP say he assaulted and robbed another man in rural Saskatchewan, then drove the victim’s stolen vehicle into the city – where police were waiting.

Christopher Luipersbeck, 38, of Lloydminster, was arrested Tuesday afternoon following a coordinated traffic stop near 36 St. and 52 Ave. in Lloydminster.

The robbery

In the early morning hours of April 29, RCMP received a report of a robbery in the Rural Municipality of Britannia. A male suspect, armed with a weapon, assaulted a man known to him and stole his vehicle. The two individuals were known to each other prior to the incident.

The arrest

Around 5 p.m., Lloydminster RCMP located the stolen vehicle near 36 St. and 52 Ave. Officers conducted a coordinated traffic stop and safely took the driver into custody.

The arrest involved assistance from Alberta RCMP’s Real Time Operations Centre, the Lloydminster RCMP General Investigation Section, and RCMP Police Dog Services.

The charges

Luipersbeck faces one count of robbery and one count of use of a forged document.

He appeared before a justice and was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear in Saskatchewan Provincial Court in Lloydminster on Monday, May 4.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Traffic impact

The arrest took place during peak traffic hours. The police presence backed up traffic along 36 St. between 52 Ave. and 57 Ave. at the height of the takedown. RCMP thanked residents for their patience during the operation.

A charge is not proof of guilt. All accused persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
