A stolen semi-truck travelling at high speed on Highway 16 led to a police pursuit near North Battleford on Wednesday morning.
Battlefords RCMP said officers were notified around 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 18 that a stolen semi was approaching North Battleford on Highway 16. Police located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled and continued east at a high rate of speed.
Additional officers moved to block sections of the highway to keep the semi a safe distance from the public.
RCMP deployed a tire deflation device in an effort to stop the vehicle. The semi ran over the first device and continued driving. Officers then set up a second deflation device, which caused the truck’s tires to begin disintegrating. The semi continued travelling on its rims before veering off the roadway and coming to a stop.
Battlefords RCMP, along with Saskatchewan RCMP Police Dog Services, contained the vehicle. An adult male exited the semi and was arrested without incident.
As a result of the investigation, 38-year-old Adam Cole of Camrose, Alta., is charged with:
- Operation while prohibited, Section 320.18 of the Criminal Code
- Flight from police, Section 320.17 of the Criminal Code
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, Section 320.13(1) of the Criminal Code
- Possession of property over $5,000 obtained by crime, Section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
Cole appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on Feb. 19.
“Our officers worked quickly to ensure other drivers stayed a safe distance from a dangerous situation,” said Inspector Ryan How, Battlefords RCMP detachment commander.
“A stolen semi travelling at high speeds on a highway is incredibly risky for everyone involved. The leadership, communication, and tactics used by our officers are a direct reflection of their commitment to keeping our communities safe.”
