Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investigating the death of a 37-year-old man in RCMP custody at the Turtleford Detachment.
RCMP executed a warrant Wednesday at a residence on Thunderchild First Nation as part of an ongoing investigation. The man was arrested without incident.
He was taken to Turtleford Detachment cells at about 1:30 p.m.
Around 3 p.m., the man experienced medical distress while in custody. RCMP officers provided immediate medical assistance.
Medical professionals were contacted and attended the detachment. The man was declared deceased at the scene.
His family has been notified of his death.
Saskatchewan RCMP notified SIRT of the in-custody death, as required under The Police Act, 1990. SIRT determined the incident falls within its mandate and will investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
RCMP said it cannot provide further information while the SIRT investigation is underway.
Turtleford is located about 87 kilometres east of Lloydminster along Highway 303.
