Vermilion RCMP responded to a serious dog attack inside a residence Wednesday night that left two caretakers injured and briefly prompted a public safety alert.

Police say officers were called to a home in Vermilion at approximately 8:21 p.m. on Jan. 14 after receiving reports that two dogs had attacked their caretakers.

Both victims suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were treated in hospital. During the incident, the dogs escaped the residence.

RCMP issued a public alert warning residents of a potential danger while the dogs were believed to be roaming the community.

The dogs returned to the residence earlier Thursday morning with the assistance of the homeowners. Police say there were no further incidents.

Responsibility for the investigation has now been transferred to the Town of Vermilion under municipal bylaws.

Under Vermilion’s Animal Control Bylaw, dogs involved in attacks may be designated as controlled dogs, subjecting owners to stricter containment, licensing, and insurance requirements.

When contacted by the Border Pulse Town officials confirmed they are investigating the incident.

“We are aware of the incident involving two dogs last night and are currently investigating,” said a town official.

Residents with further questions are being directed to the Town of Vermilion.
