Parks Canada has recognized fifteen members of the County of Vermilion River Fire Service for their role in helping defend Jasper during last summer’s devastating wildfire.

In a letter to County Fire Chief Kirk Hughes, Parks Canada President and CEO Ron Hallman commended the department’s quick mobilization and teamwork as flames threatened homes, wildlife habitats, and park infrastructure.

“The collaboration, expertise and resources made available by you and your team were crucial to the overall response and we are immensely grateful for your support,” wrote Hallman. “The coins reflect Parks Canada’s appreciation for your invaluable contribution and honour a collective sense of camaraderie and teamwork.”

Within hours of being notified, County firefighters were on the road to Jasper with crews and equipment to support fire suppression efforts. Each firefighter has since received a commemorative challenge coin from Parks Canada, a symbol of gratitude for their courage and professionalism during one of Alberta’s most destructive wildfires.

Those deployed included:
Fire Chief Ron Miskie (Marwayne), Captains Martha Spinks (Islay), Tyler Wilson (Paradise Valley), Wyatt Roberts (Islay), Lieutenants Kyle Bergquist (Paradise Valley) and Wayne Roach (Vermilion), and firefighters Matthew Sunderland, Mick MacDonald, Paul Conlon, Cody St. Germain, and Tyler Coates-Lingley.

County Fire Chief Kirk Hughes and Protective Services Operations Officer Austin Armitage deployed in support roles, while Captains Lyle Lawrence (Clandonald) and Bryce Lytle (Vermilion) assisted through Lakeland College’s Emergency Training Centre.

The County credited all participating halls, Blackfoot, Clandonald, Dewberry, Islay, Kitscoty, Marwayne, Paradise Valley, and Vermilion, for standing ready when the call came.
