Two people face drug trafficking charges after Turtleford RCMP seized 40 grams of suspected cocaine during a traffic stop near Highway 21.

Colby Riguidel, 32, of the RM of Frenchman Butte, and Christine Russel, 45, of St. Walburg, were each charged, RCMP said in a news release Monday.

Officers were on proactive patrol on Sept. 24 at about 10:50 p.m. when they saw a truck on Highway 21 with its lights off, police said. They stopped the vehicle.

Police determined the driver was prohibited from driving. They also saw drug trafficking paraphernalia in plain view, RCMP said.

The driver and both passengers were arrested. A search of the vehicle turned up the cocaine, cash and more paraphernalia, according to police.

Riguidel and Russel each face one count of possession of cocaine and one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking. Both charges fall under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Riguidel also faces one count of operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code. He is charged with two counts of failing to comply with release order conditions as well.

The third person in the vehicle was released without charge, police said.

The two accused were scheduled to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court on Monday.

The charges have not been proven in court. Everyone accused of a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Turtleford RCMP continue to investigate.
