Between April 8 and 22, Maidstone RCMP responded to 111 calls for service. Most were routine. Some were not.
A Maidstone woman reported her phone stolen on April 8. When police followed up, she said it wasn’t stolen after all – and that she’d handle it herself. Officers took her word for it.
Three days later, an iPhone took matters into its own hands. On April 14, the phone’s built-in crash detection automatically alerted police to a collision in Maidstone. RCMP Officers attended and found no crash. The owner confirmed he had simply dropped his phone.
On April 11, a Maidstone woman reported unknown people knocking on her door and running away. No description of the suspects was provided. The RCMP investigation into the ding-dong ditchers remains open.
On April 13, officers found a man lying in a ditch along Highway 16 in the RM of Paynton. He was cold but uninjured. The man told police he had been hitchhiking from Regina and had slept in the ditch overnight. EMS transported him to hospital to warm up.
A moose wandered into the Town of Maidstone on April 19. The matter was referred to SK Conservation. The moose’s destination was not reported.
That same day, someone reported a horse in the ditch along Highway 16 in the RM of Eldon. Officers patrolled the area. No horse was found.
Then there were the vehicles.
On April 21, a caller reported their vehicle had gotten stuck in a snow pile somewhere “in the country” about a month earlier. They had left it there and returned to find it gone.
The next day, a separate caller in the RM of Paynton reported their vehicle stolen from the side of the highway. RCMP members called around and tracked it down, it was at Vista Towing, hauled away by the Department of Highways because it was blocking snow removal equipment ahead of the incoming storm.
Two calls. Two missing vehicles. One very patient snowstorm.
