Lloydminster residents are being asked to clear storm drains and check their sump pumps ahead of a wet and windy weekend.
The City of Lloydminster issued a public notice Thursday after forecasts called for periods of heavy rain through Saturday and Sunday. The Weather Network is projecting a 90 per cent chance of precipitation both days, with Saturday expected to bring the heaviest rainfall.
Saturday’s daytime forecast calls for heavy rain developing late morning, with wind gusts up to 60 km/h and a low risk of an isolated thunderstorm in the afternoon. The Weather Network is projecting 10 to 15 mm during the day alone, with another 5 mm possible overnight. Sunday is forecast to bring moderate rain on and off throughout the day, with an additional 10 mm possible.
The city said no widespread flooding is anticipated, but encouraged residents to take preventative steps before rain arrives.
That includes clearing leaves, grass clippings and debris from nearby catch basins and storm drains, checking that sump pumps are working, and confirming downspouts are directing water away from foundations and not onto neighbouring properties.
Residents are also being asked to clean eavestroughs and gutters, and to monitor low-lying areas on their property where water tends to pool.
Municipal crews will be on standby throughout the weekend to respond to localized drainage concerns.
The city is also reminding drivers not to travel through standing water on roadways. Depth and road conditions below the surface may be difficult to judge.
