Cold Lake RCMP shot and killed a suspect following a domestic call on Thursday afternoon, prompting an independent investigation by Alberta’s police watchdog.
Officers were called to a residence at 4:48 p.m. on June 25 after receiving a report of a domestic incident. When they arrived, they determined the suspect was armed with a firearm. The two other occupants of the residence fled and were unharmed.
RCMP said communication attempts with the suspect were unsuccessful, and the Emergency Response Team was called to assist.
“An altercation occurred with police in which at least one officer discharged their service weapon, striking the suspect,” RCMP said in a statement.
The suspect was declared deceased at the scene. No officers were injured.
Under provincial legislation, the Police Review Commission CEO was immediately notified, triggering deployment of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to conduct an independent investigation.
RCMP said its own internal review process has also been launched. That review will examine RCMP training, policy, police response and the officer’s duty status at the time of the incident.
The detachment said it will fully cooperate with ASIRT investigators.
