The City of Lloydminster is not planning for a potential Alberta independence scenario, according to administration.

In response to questions about whether contingency planning has been considered, city staff said the issue is not currently on the municipality’s radar.

“It is not currently a scenario the City is considering or planning for,” administration wrote in a statement.

“The City of Lloydminster values its unique position in both Alberta and Saskatchewan and remains committed to productive relationships with both federal and provincial leadership.”

The inquiry asked whether any high-level planning had been discussed given Lloydminster’s bi-provincial structure, including potential impacts on taxation, policing, healthcare delivery, education agreements, infrastructure funding and regulatory oversight.

Staff confirmed no such planning has been undertaken.

The question comes amid renewed discussion around Alberta sovereignty and separation, including a recent appearance in Lloydminster by the Alberta Prosperity Project, where audience members raised questions about what independence would mean for the border city.

Lloydminster operates under a unique charter that allows it to function as one municipality across two provinces. Many services, funding agreements and regulatory frameworks depend on cooperation between Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Administration did not indicate whether the matter has been discussed at the council level, only that it is not a scenario currently being considered or planned for.

For now, the city’s official position is clear: no contingency work is underway.
