Two men from Onion Lake are facing dozens of firearm-related charges after an RCMP pursuit ended with arrests near Frog Lake, Alta., earlier this week.

On Dec. 10, at approximately 2:20 p.m., Elk Point RCMP attempted to stop a vehicle in the Frog Lake area that was believed to be connected to a drug trafficking and weapons investigation originating out of Onion Lake, Sask.

Police say the driver refused to stop and fled. Additional RCMP units responded, and a tire deflation device was deployed, disabling the vehicle a short time later. Officers arrested the occupants without incident.

Weapons, drugs seized during arrest

A search of the vehicle and its occupants, incidental to arrest, led to the seizure of brass knuckles, ammunition, suspected methamphetamine packaged in a manner consistent with drug trafficking, and drug trafficking paraphernalia.

After the arrest, members of the public approached officers and reported seeing two firearms thrown from the vehicle in the area where the tire deflation device was deployed. Police say the occupants later confirmed the firearms had been discarded during the pursuit.

Officers recovered a shotgun and a rifle. RCMP say both firearms had tampered serial numbers and illegal modifications.

Multiple charges laid

As a result of the investigation, Courtlin Littlewolfe, 39, and Warren Littlewolfe, 35, both residents of Onion Lake, have been charged with flight from police, possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a weapon contrary to a court order, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, and 22 additional firearm-related offences.

The two men were brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody. They are scheduled to appear next in Alberta Court of Justice in St. Paul on Dec. 18.

Public assistance praised

“We would like to start by thanking the members of the public who made sure that we were aware of the firearms that had been thrown out of the vehicle, thus ensuring the safety of the community,” said Cst. Nicholas Couture of the Elk Point RCMP Detachment.

“We take the safety of our community very seriously and will keep working proactively, using information from the public, our partners and other RCMP detachments, be they in Alberta or otherwise, to find and arrest those responsible for causing harm to others,” Couture said.
