As of 8 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, travel conditions along Highway 16 between Edmonton and Saskatoon are mostly clear, with a few winter-affected stretches requiring caution. One person has already commented the highway through town is extremely slick this morning.

Current conditions

  • Highway 16 between Maidstone and Lloydminster: partially covered
  • Highway 16 near Edmonton: partially covered in spots
  • Remaining sections between Lloydminster and Saskatoon: clear at this time
  • Visibility: good overall
  • Weather: ice crystals reported in the Lloydminster area
  • Temperature: around -22 C, with wind chill near -34
  • Winds: southeast 20 km/h, gusting up to 35 km/h

What to watch for today

  • Slick sections where snow cover remains, particularly east of Maidstone and near Edmonton
  • Gusty winds may cause localized drifting in open areas
  • Extreme cold increases frostbite risk during stops or in the event of a breakdown

Looking ahead to Wednesday

Snow is expected to move into the region Wednesday morning, with 5 to 10 centimeters currently forecast. Some forecasters indicate totals could be higher, depending on how the system tracks across central Alberta and Saskatchewan. Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate once snowfall begins, particularly on Highway 16.

Drivers planning longer trips may want to consider travel timing ahead of the next system and monitor conditions closely.

Motorists are reminded to slow down, increase following distance, and be prepared for rapidly changing winter road conditions.

Conditions can change quickly. We’ll update if needed. As always, check back for any incidents locally which will effect your driving in the community.
